Gynecology is the field of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the uterus, vagina, ovaries, and cervix. You may have heard of an OB/GYN, which refers to obstetricians and gynecologists. An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. Because gynecologists specialize in the female reproductive system, many gynecologists are also obstetricians.

Dr. Ronald E. de la Peña is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist with decades of experience. His goal is to provide the highest quality care in women’s health. As an OB/GYN, Dr. de la Peña specializes in a wide range of diagnosis and treatments. If you are seeking a trusted and dedicated OB/GYN, feel free to contact us to schedule a consultation.

What Does a Gynecologist Do?

Gynecologists provide a number of services involving both female reproductive and sexual health services, such as:

  • Pelvic exams
  • Pap tests
  • Cancer screenings
  • Testing and treatments for vaginal infections
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic pain
  • Concerns about your period
  • Routine exams
  • Preventive care
  • Birth control

If you have any concerns such as the ones mentioned above, contact our team to schedule a consultation with our skilled gynecologist. We are here to help you every step of the way.

When Should I Have My First Gynecology Visit?

Our doctor recommends women to have their first gynecologist visit between the ages of 13 and 17. Sometimes, we do not involve a pelvic examination on the very first visit; however, we do want to talk to you about your health and what you should expect at later appointments.

However, if you are experiencing heavy and painful periods, then some tests may be necessary.

Things You Should Always Discuss With Your Gynecologist

There are many things that patients should always be open about when it comes to seeing their gynecologist. This is because when it comes to your sexual and reproductive health, you may be unsure as to what is “normal” and what may be a sign of a potential problem. As a highly experienced gynecologist, Dr. de la Peña wants to ensure that his patients feel comfortable. For many people, seeing a gynecologist may be nerve-racking and you may be embarrassed to discuss certain topics. However, this is our job and we want to make sure that your sexual and reproductive health are always in the best condition to avoid any complications. Therefore, we encourage our patients to always be upfront and honest. Here are some important things that you should always discuss with your gynecologist:

  • Painful, heavy, or irregular periods
  • Sexual discomfort
  • Sexual history
  • Urinary or fecal leakage
  • Birth control options and symptoms
  • Swelling, bumps, or growths “down there”
  • Pregnancy and fertility
